Identify the fruit

Try this question before revealing the answer.

Which type of dry dehiscent fruit splits along only one suture, releasing its seeds, as seen in Calotropis?

A. Legume

B. Follicle

C. Silique

D. Capsule

Choose A, B, C or D, and explain why.

Reveal answer and explanation

Answer: B — Follicle. A follicle develops from one carpel and opens along one suture (seam). Calotropis produces follicles, so both clues in the question point to B.

A typical pea legume opens along two sutures. This is a useful comparison, not a rule for every member of the legume family: some fruits open differently or remain closed. A silique has two carpels and leaves a persistent central framework after its valves separate. A capsule develops from two or more fused carpels and can open in several ways. Neither describes the follicle specified here.

In this September 16 sample, 14 of 18 answered responses were wrong (77.8%); 3 additional responses were skips. A: 9, B: 4, C: 0, D: 5. A was the most selected wrong answer: 9/18 answered responses (50.0%), or 9/14 wrong responses (64.3%). These counts do not tell us why a learner chose an option.

Sample: first responses per account matched to the exact served question form; staff and unknown forms excluded. Snapshot: 17 September 2026, 02:45:22 IST; late-ingested records may change the counts. This is not a count of all September 16 players.

Which clue decided your answer: the suture count, the example, or something else? If you think another option fits, share your reasoning or source.
