After an IUPAC lecture, what should I practise?

Finishing a lecture can leave you with a practical question: which questions should I try next?

In one public post, a NEET 2027 aspirant said they understood points in a one-shot lecture but wanted guidance on practice. In another, older discussion, a student preparing for a school test—and also for NEET, as they later clarified—said naming was still unclear. These are two different experiences: choosing practice after a lecture, and needing help understanding naming itself. They are individual accounts, not evidence of how common either problem is. Before choosing a practice set, check which direction its questions go:

These tasks are different. Getting a name-to-structure question right does not, by itself, show that you can name a structure independently. Choose a question that matches the task you want to check.

At PrepArena, we are using questions like these to examine whether our practice makes the task clear and helps students find the step they need to work on. We still need to test whether this leads to useful repeat practice. A request for help is a starting point for that investigation, not proof that a particular drill solves it.

Here is a self-check you can try with material you have already studied:

  1. Take one fresh question and identify what it asks you to do.
  2. Try it before opening the answer. Note the first decision where you needed help.
  3. Compare that step with a checked worked solution. If the explanation is still unclear, ask your teacher about that specific step.
  4. If you try another question, keep it within what you have been taught and record any hints you used.

A correct repeat answer and a different question solved without help provide different evidence. A new question may also be easier or harder, so one result does not establish mastery.

This is an optional way to inspect your own attempt, not a tested promise of better marks. The useful note to take away is specific: “I needed help at this step,” rather than simply “I finished the lecture.”
